What Are You Willing To Pay?
There’s a fee nobody talks about. It doesn’t show up on a credit card statement, and there’s no monthly invoice or receipt. But if you decide to live a bold life, you will pay it every time.
I’ve started calling it the Bold Life Fee.
It’s the cost of choosing a life that actually looks like the one you talk about. Not the safe version. Not the socially approved version. The real one.
And lately, my wife and I have been paying it, big time. You see, we just bought a farm. Yep—an honest-to-goodness 128 acres of fields, woods, old structures, a giant rundown barn and tons of work to be done. It’s a place that instantly made sense to us, and almost nobody else.
Owning a farm has been one of my wife, Alisha’s, lifelong dreams. Not a Pinterest fantasy or a passing “wouldn’t that be fun” naïve thought. It’s been a deep, quiet, long-held vision. She has always wanted it—all of it, including land, space, family, legacy and honest sweat-of-the-brow work to build something that outlives us.
And the reaction from friends, family and strangers (God bless social media) alike has been predictable. Ranging from confusion to “better you than me” sentiments. Because here’s the hard truth that most of us don’t like to admit:
When you make a bold move, people don’t evaluate it through your values. They evaluate it through their fears.
They aren’t asking whether it’s right for you; they’re asking whether they could do it themselves. And when the answer is, “No,” discomfort follows—usually in the form of “polite” questions or statements that feel more like judgments, such as:
-“Wow! That seems like a lot of -work.”
-“So, what’s the plan?”
-“Do you think that will be a good investment over time?”
-“That doesn’t seem very practical, but good luck!”
Those of us who choose the bold life pay the fee in a variety of ways. We experience discomfort and disapproval, some sleepless nights and a lot of explaining ourselves to people who (for the most part) have no intention of understanding anyway. And that’s before the real work even begins.
Owning land is not romantic. It’s a responsibility and maintenance. It’s learning as we go, and it’s long-term thinking in a short-term world. It demands a very large fee. But here’s the other side that doesn’t get enough airtime:
Avoiding the Bold Life Fee costs more.
It costs you resentment. It costs you regret. It costs you the quiet ache of knowing you played it safe when you didn’t have to.
I’ve met too many people who deferred their dreams until “someday,” and I’ve heard all of the excuses. While each excuse causes further delay, time marches on until, sadly, “someday” never shows up. But regret surely does.
The Bold Life Fee is not a punishment. It’s a price of admission. You pay it to build a life that feels aligned, to honor the dreams that won’t leave you alone, and so your future self doesn’t look back and wonder why you ignored that pull.
Our farm wasn’t an impulse purchase. It was a decision to invest in something that matched the life we say we want to live. The ROI isn’t something to be explained to anyone else; it’s something to be experienced—in pristine sunrises over lush, unspoiled acreage. In more meaningful family time. In falling into bed at night with sore muscles and plenty of endorphins coursing through our veins from fresh air and hard work. In the joy, and yes—the challenges—of pushing our limits and forcing ourselves to grow.
And yes, it will cost us. It will cost us, time, energy, money and comfort. It will also cost us certainty, and more. But we were going to pay a price either way. Everyone does. You either pay the Bold Life Fee up front by choosing courage, or you pay it slowly through compromise and regret. One hurts now. The other hurts later.
So, if a decision, a thought or an idea keeps tugging at you and it doesn’t make sense to everyone else, but it won’t leave you alone, ask yourself: “Am I willing to pay the Bold Life Fee for the life I say I want?”
Because the fee is coming regardless. The only choice you get is what you’re paying for. And I’ve learned this the hard way. The bold life is never free, but it’s worth every damn penny.

A third-generation entrepreneur, Joe Altieri, is the inventor, founder, and former CEO of FlexScreen.
During his 20+ years in the window industry, Joe recognized the inherent problems with old-style aluminum window screens and personally dealt with constant customer frustration. Always an outside-the-box thinker, he knew there had to be a better way, so he set up shop in his garage and got to work. After years of trial and error, FlexScreen, the world's first and only flexible window screen, was born.
As the first "new" idea in an old industry, FlexScreen quickly gained international attention and earned multiple awards. Most notably, FlexScreen was catapulted to the forefront when Joe appeared on ABC's hit show, Shark Tank™, in January 2020. Three of the five Sharks battled for a piece of FlexScreen with Lori Greiner, the Queen of QVC, ultimately winning the deal. Since that first appearance, Joe has appeared on Shark Tank twice more in update segments highlighting the meteoric rise of FlexScreen in the window industry, with Lori Greiner stating, "I actually think that FlexScreen may wind up to be one of the best and most successful products in Shark Tank history."
In February 2025, FlexScreen was acquired by RiteScreen - the largest independent manufacturer of window screens in America. What started as an idea in Joe's garage has become a true American Dream success story.
Joe is a firm believer in giving back and is generous with his resources and time. He has been honored and recognized as one of Pittsburgh's Volunteers of the Year. He lives in Pittsburgh with his wife, Alisha. They have four children, seven grandchildren, and one very pampered Cane Corso.
